Jules Verne, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, H G Wells, The Time Machine, and movies such as Blade Runner and Brazil with all their visual and technical anachronisms - these are the sources from which Steampunk derives its look. Victorian ornamental excess and steam technology's functional excess merge with current technical abilities to form a new aesthetic.  The proponents of Steampunk, responding to modern technology’s invisible mechanisms and minimal appearance, call for a return to superfluous embellishment for the sheer joy of it.  They say you can have your digital gadgetry and gadgets too.
